"Alistair... Why did you ever decide to make guitars?" That's a question everybody asks and the fact is I'm not quite sure. I suppose it all goes back to when I was at college studying polymer engineering. There I met a guy called Donal who could play guitar like nobody I had ever met. I used to sit for hours watching him play at a speed that was almost impossible to watch. He had me hooked, and within weeks I bought my first guitar. I was never very good on the guitar or rather I didn't ever take the time to get good, but I was always a big fan of the guitar. During 1994 I worked in St. Louis building F1 race boats from carbon fibre and that sparked something within me that was to shape my future. It wasn't straight away that I linked carbon and guitars but I knew these materials could do some incredible things. 1998 saw me finally try to build a guitar and because I owned a fibreglass company I built it from fibreglass. I took a mould from my acoustic guitar and set about building. The only reference I had was my own guitar and I copied it as best as I could. It turned out alright, but it was a bit heavy and hard to play but it did have incredible sustain. Then I remembered carbon fibre and thought I'd try using that for a guitar. I did and it sounded much better and I also got a book about building guitars. So I kind of knew what I was doing. So why stop there? I kept building more trying to perfect it and I can say I've perfected it and somehow along the line we've kind of reinvented the guitar. Yes, guitars have been built from carbon fibre before, but what we've done is to build a guitar with no compromises. Everything has been redesigned to create a package that is both stunning to look at and stunning to play. I feel proud of what my colleagues and I have achieved over the last few years and I hope that you will be proud to own an Emerald guitar. To contact Emerald Guitars, click here. |
